Character Name:Aang
Series:Avatar: The Last Airbender
Age:13
Physical Description:As with the rest of the monks of the Jongmu Shaolin Temple, Aang has strange light blue lines tattooed onto his body, representing the flow of energy within themselves, every person, and the world as a whole. Also, his head is shaved (but not his eyebrows). This allows the large tattoo on his head to be seen easily, identifying him as a Patola Monk. He wears simple, but bright monk robes. Due to the nature of the Jongmu Temple, Aang’s robes are tight to prevent potential danger from falling off the temple.

Personality: It is hard to ever find Aang not being cheerful. He, as a rule, believes in the good in everyone, peace, and love. At the same time, to protect lives, he will never hesitate to save lives. He’s an idealist cultivated with naivety. Also something unique in this age, Aang believes in spirits, and other things considered superstitious by others.
Abilities/Strengths/Weaponry:Aang has been trained in martial arts since the day he was born. What the monks train in does not rely on strength, but instead on grapples, and generally turning the opponents strength against them. He carries a fighting staff with doubles as a glider. Its wings and propeller pop out at the push of a button, and it is powered by gas that heats a small, efficient boiler.
Weaknesses:Naive!! If you told him that burly tattooed guy with a sword could give him directions, he would go and ask. He has spent his entire life in the temple, and doesn’t know much about how the world as a whole works, other than names of cities and there being division in the classes.
History: Aang was raised by the Jongmu Shaolin Temple. The temple itself is an airship that doubles as a boat. Since 1874, when the Revolutionary War broke out, the monks have avoided any of the islands, since they feared that one of the sides would seek them out for their fighting abilities. The monks live off of the sea, and send small ships over to the edge of the Sanzu in order to use the gasses to fuel the temple. The temple is far too large to pass over the Sanzu, so to travel, the monks always take the long way around. Before advances in steam technology, it was common to give an offering to the Patola Monks to hitch a ride around the Dead River. The monks are vegetarians, and mostly eat seaweed. Their diet is supplemented by the gardens of fruit and vegetables they keep on the ship. Bread is made for grain that the monks trade for. They stocked up on a lot of grain before their isolation, so Aang hasn’t been without bread. The kelp loafs are a particular favorite of Aang.
Aang never really had a mother or father. Children were donated to the temple, usually orphans, or the sons or daughters of monks who gave up the lifestyle. Aang led a happy life, until the monks began to think he was the reincarnation of a past famous monk, known for his prowess at fighting, eloquence of words, and his ability to bring peace to the country. Aang’s mentor wanted to make sure that Aang had a normal childhood. The other elder monks, feeling the pressure from the war, decided to advance Aang’s training in order to prepare him for his “duties”. The other young monks began to avoid Aang because the elders had singled him out and his prowess in his studies was a hard act to follow. Aang’s training kept him away from most of the monks. After about four and a half years of this training, in 1878, Aang fled the Jongmu Shaolin Temple on his glider. He had become angry at the Patola Elders for being hypocritical. They were training Aang to go out and fix the war by himself, yet they had been running from it themselves for years. He and the other monks were not even aware of the war’s end because of their self imposed isolation. Aang wanted to teach them a lesson by example, see the world, and most importantly, escape from the training where they expected Aang to become an expert in every aspect of being a Patola Monk overnight. Shortly after he fled, the Sanzu which he was a few miles from, flared up. The wave of heat and rush of air thrust Aang out of the air and into the sea.
A fishing couple from Tartarus’s port city Illyria found the unconscious Aang clutching his glider to the north east of their island. They didn’t have much money, but they tried to care for the comatose boy as much as they could. To feed Aang, they minced up fish into a slushie, then made him drink it. After two weeks, he still hadn’t awakened, and the couple began to search Illyria for doctors, but all of them were too expensive. Since then, they have been gathering money to head to Navarre, where they hear there is a clinic with a knowledgeable, kind, and generous healer named Katara. It has been two months since the couple found Aang, and the husband has headed out to Navarre with Aang in his wheelbarrow, usually used for selling fish.
